Previews Spotlight #115 (May->Jul) Deadline: Sat AM, May 6

by JohnMayo
Previews will be coming out on Wednesday, April 26th. The deadline for sending in submissions to the Previews Spotlight is the crack of dawn on Saturday, May 6th.

Please post which comics you will be sending in submissions for here on this thread with the full title, issue number and publisher. That way we can reduce the number of duplicate submissions and maximize the number of different items that are covered. If someone has already posted that they will be covering something you are passionate about discussing, we are okay with more than one submission for the item but want that to be the exceptional case.

Remember: Anyone can send in a short audio clip talking about any book in the upcoming Previews (or slated for release around that same time). This includes creators, publishers and other people directly involved in the project. This is your chance to promote items, including ones you have worked on.

The email address to send the clips to is TheGuys@ComicBookPage.com.

The Previews Spotlight is released as a mono podcast, not stereo. If you record in stereo, I'll convert it to a mono record by dropping one of the tracks.

The Comic Book Page podcast is an all-ages podcast and is profanity free. I will have to edit out any profanity in the clips, including any unfortunately named comic book titles. If that section of the clip can't be easily removed I will have to replace the profanity with the DTMF tones for "profanity". In addition to this being my personal stand on profanity, it is also an iTunes policy: If your audio includes explicit language, we require you to set the explicit tag- regardless of why it is spoken (title of comic, name of street, etc.) This includes any profanity in the title or solicitation text.

Please follow the naming convention of:
p###-[M###-]ItemName-YourName.mp3.

p###: the page number in Previews (ex: an item on page 80 would start with p080-)
Note that the "p" is lowercase. I use the name of the clip to sort the tracks in Audacity and it sorts all of lowercase letters before any of the uppercase letters. Obviously, I can fix this part of the filename if needed. If you don't know the page number, that is fine. Just use "p000-" instead and I'll look it up. Just use "p000-" for this part of the filename. If it is something not in Previews, use 888 for the page number and be sure to include a URL or whatever information might be needed to get the item for I can include that in the show notes if needed.
M###: If the item is in the Marvel Previews, use the first even page number in Previews for Marvel with the page number in the Marvel Previews. If the item is not in the Marvel Previews, skip the M###- part of the file naming convention.
ItemName: This is the name of the item. We need is enough to determine which item it is.The more complete this is, the better. Capitalize the first letter of each word and don't include spaces or punctuation. For example, "AllNewAllDifferentButSomehowStillNotParticularlyDifferentFromWhatHasGoneBeforeUncannyTitle1".
YourName: All we need here is enough to properly credit you in the show notes.

I've got some automation around the episode assembly process which uses the dashes to parse the filenames. Please do not include spaces in the filename. Not all of the tools I use to prepare the clips for the episode handle spaces or other odd things in filenames gracefully.

If you have a link you'd like me to include in the show notes, include both your name and the link it in the email to me and I'll add it to the system I use for doing the show notes.

The episode covers items in the order they are in Previews so listeners can follow along in Previews if they want to.

Here are the ComicBookPage picks of the month:

DC
MAY170289
BATMAN 66 MEETS THE LEGION OF SUPER HEROES #1
(W) Lee Allred (A/CA) Michael Allred
In pursuit of the time-traveling criminal known as Universo, the super-powered kids from the 30th century travel back to the 1960s to enlist the aid of the “greatest teen superhero ever” — Robin, the Boy Wonder! But Batman’s hard-boiled nemesis Egghead has stolen one of their unattended time bubbles and taken off to the Legion’s own time period. Looks like Batman has to head to the far-flung future with one group of heroes while Robin stays in the swinging sixties with another. Holy time-travel paradox! (STL050649)
32pgs, FC SRP: $3.99

MAY170358
AMERICAN WAY THOSE ABOVE AND BELOW #1 (OF 6) (MR)
(W) John Ridley (A/CA) Georges Jeanty
It’s been a decade since the Civil Defense Corps was exposed as a fraud created by the U.S. Government for propaganda purposes. While most of the heroes who survived the catastrophe have retired or disappeared, the New American still carries on, trying to keep communities safe amid the social turmoil of the 1970s. But with the nation split in two over civil rights and the changing political landscape, this isn’t easy. Some of the American’s former colleagues are on opposite sides of the law: Amber Waves joined a group of domestic terrorists, while Missy, a.k.a. Ole Miss, has thrown her hat into the political ring. As the ground shifts beneath his feet and new threats arise, which side will the American choose? This sequel to the hit miniseries by the original team of writer John Ridley (Oscar-winning screenwriter of 12 Years a Slave and creator of TV’s American Crime) and artist Georges Jeanty (Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season Eight, Serenity: No Power in the ‘Verse) moves the story forward in history, factoring in how real-life events might be affected by the presence of superheroes, and how those events change the heroes in turn. (STL049956)
MATURE THEMES
32pgs, FC (1 of 6) SRP: $3.99

IDW

MAY170382
TMNT USAGI YOJIMBO
(W/A/CA) Stan Sakai
The TMNT are teleported to a world of talking animals—the world of Usagi Yojimbo! When the samarai rabbit embarks on a quest to save Japan and the deadly Jei blocks his path, a Turtle team-up may be the only chance for survival! (STL048322)
48pgs, FC (1 of 1) SRP: $7.99

MAY170517
TIME & VINE #1
(W/A/CA) Thom Zahler
A grade school history teacher, looking for a respite from her life’s problems, finds the ultimate escape when the owner of a local winery reveals its secret to her: drink the right glass of wine in the right tasting room, and travel back in time to the year it was bottled. Together, they’ll journey through the history of the 200-year old winery… as well as their own. (STL048706)
48pgs, FC SRP: $4.99

IMAGE

MAY170639
MAGE HERO DENIED #0
(W/A/CA) Matt Wagner
MATT WAGNER returns with the third and final volume of his epic fantasy trilogy—MAGE: THE HERO DENIED. This long-awaited conclusion follows the adventures of the reluctant everyman hero Kevin Matchstick, who, after encountering a shaggy and beguiling wizard, discovers he is the reincarnation of the legendary Pendragon and able to wield the power of the mystical weapon, Excalibur. The story picks up several years after the fateful climax of THE HERO DEFINED and finds Kevin beginning to once again doubt the virtue of his actions and the course of his destiny.
This introductory, half-sized issue #0 continues MAGE’s tradition of an “Interlude” short-adventure, bridging the gap between this series and the previous storyline. It also acts as a perfect jumping-on spot for new readers. (STL050660)
16pgs, FC SRP: $1.99

MARVEL

MAY170813
SPIDER-MEN II #1 (OF 5)
THIS IS IT, TRUE BELIEVERS!
The moment five years in the making is finally here! The first time Peter Parker and Miles Morales met ended with a question — WHO IS THE MILES MORALES OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE?! Now that the Miles you know and love is with Peter in the Marvel Universe, you’re finally going to get that answer to who the OTHER Miles Morales is! And that’s just the tip of the iceberg as Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli bring you the next heart-stopping adventure for both Peter Parker and Miles Morales!
Rated T+ (STL050311)
(1 of 5) SRP: $3.99
