Previews Spotlight #055 (May->Jul): May 4th 5pm pacific

Posted: Tue Apr 17, 2012 4:43 pm
by BobBretall
Previews is coming out on April 25th. Previews call will be on Friday May 4th at 5pm Pacific / 6pm Mountain / 7pm Central / 8pm Eastern.
This is the same night that Avengers comes out, so hopefully everyone that normally joins the call can hold off & see it on Saturday May 5th (Free Comic Book Day!)

Submissions for the Previews Spotlight #055 show should be in by Saturday Morning, 8am pacific time, Saturday May 4th.

As always, get on Skype around the start time (or join any time after, the call can run 4 hours of rousing comics chat) and look for thejohnmayo OR BobBretall & message to get joined into the call.

Of course you can start sending in submissions as soon as you have them done. Sending them in early is appreciated as it give us more time to organize the clips and plan out the episode.

Discuss any of the new comics AND call dibs on reviewing any particular comic on this thread.

Remember: We encourage anyone to send in a short audio clip where they can talk about any book that's coming out in the upcoming Previews that they are really excited about. The email address to send the clips to is TheGuys@ComicBookPage.com. (Some people were only send them to either just John or just Bob and we both need to get them to prepare to recording the episode. By using TheGuys email address, the email goes to both Bob and John.)

PLEASE: Each featured item should be in a separate audio file.

We would also appreciate it if you put the page number followed by the full name of the item in the filename. If you don't know the page number, that is fine. Just leave it off. But having the full name of the item the clip is for makes it much easier for us to organize the files and prepare for recording the episode.
Tips on how to record a clip can be found here.

I'm on the fence about these from IDW:
Bernie Wrightson’s The Muck Monster: Artist’s Edition Portfolio
Bernie Wrightson (w & a)
Bernie Wrightson is one of the most acclaimed horror artist's of all time. His work on Swamp Thing and many DC mystery books are hailed as classics of the form, but his undisputed masterpiece is Frankenstein, illustrated from the Mary Shelley novel. Leading up to Frankenstein, Wrightson did a series of breathtaking stories for Creepy and Eerie magazines, in the mid 1970s. Chief among these stories, and with the beginnings of the style he adopted for Frankenstein, was The Muck Monster.
Now, IDW Publishing is pleased to announce the first Artist's Edition portfolio, and featuring the incredibly intricate detail of Bernie Wrightson's The Muck Monster. As with all Artist's Editions books or portfolios, the original art is meticulously scanned in color and from the actual original art.
BW • $29.99 • 7 prints • 14.5” x 19”
Neal Adams’ Thrill Kill: Artist’s Edition Portfolio
Neal Adams (w & a)
Neal Adams redefined the look of comics in the 1970s. His groundbreaking dynamic storytelling, coupled with a sense of realism that was never before seen in mainstream comics, has made Adams one of the most influential artists of the last 50 years. He was responsible for what many consider to be the definitive version of Batman, as well as being the co-creator of one of the Caped Crusader’s greatest villains: Ras Al Ghul. He has produced near legendary runs on Green Lantern, Deadman (in Strange Adventures), the Avengers, the X-Men and many more.
Now IDW is pleased to present one of Neal's outstanding stories in the Artist's Edition Portfolio format. Each page scanned from the original art to match in exacting terms the look and feel of his original art.
BW • $29.99 • 8 prints • 12” x 18”
Pro:
* I love the idea of Artist's Editions, and having a self contained portfolio for a short story when enough work isn't available to make a whole HC is an interesting compromise.
* I'd love to see some originals by these guys
* I've never heard of or seen the stories they are doing, so it would be "new to me".

Con:
* I've never heard of or seen the stories they are printing. I'm not convinced these are iconic works by these creators, or else I'd probably have heard of people speak reverently of these at some point over the years, but maybe I'm just not "in the know"
* Price-per-page is MUCH higher than on the HC books.

--------------------------------

The regular Artist's Editions are "net cost" to retailers and typically not offered at much of a discount. If these are actually going to cost me $30 each, I may or may not get them. If they are treated more like regular items and are discounted at least 30%, I'll pick them up without question.

Yeah, I think I stared at that solicitation in quiet disbelief for a couple of minutes. I might get it just because it's so wrong. Mark Texeira on fully painted art sounds pretty cool. I'd love to see Punnie fire off an M4 or something in space, and watch him spin and spin and spin until he vomits in his space suit.
