Big Marvel Event of 2012: X-Men vs Avengers

running 12 biweekly issues and featuring five of the industry's most influential writers: Brian Michael Bendis, Jason Aaron, Ed Brubaker, Jonathan Hickman and Matt Fraction.
"It's one of those legendary ideas: What if the Avengers fought the X-Men? It doesn't get much easier to describe than that," Brubaker says.
Kicking off in a special "zero issue" prologue in March written by Bendis and Aaron, Avengers vs. X-Men begins the next month with an extinction-level event barreling its way toward Earth, namely the cosmic entity of death and rebirth known as the Phoenix Force. It's looking for a new host who will possess all of its power, which may or may not be the mutant teenager Hope Summers.
Cyclops, Wolverine, Magneto and the other X-Men want to protect her and prepare her if she's to be the new Phoenix. Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man and their fellow Avengers want her handed over to them so they can figure out what to do with her and keep the world safe from a potentially fiery fate.
Suffice it to say, tensions — and fisticuffs — arise.
Please chime in & let us know if you'd like John to start doing some solo coverage on Marvel, because I'm skipping this event & anything it ties in to.

It sounds like the Avengers and X-Men have the same exact goal .... to protect or shield Hope and figure out the best way to handle this. If the smarts in both groups can't realize this and come to fighting instead, what does that say about the two groups?
Sounds like a dumb story idea with little creativity. I just started getting into the X books and I like them, but I hope they don't bog them down with event tie-ins like Fear Itself.

I guess the villains as heroes trend is dead so why not heroes as villains?!
I would volunteer to be John's straight man but I also will probably pass. Funny bec. I just stuck my toe back in the x-universe water with Wolverine and the X-men, now it looks like I'll be pulling it back out. Too bad.
I wonder if this means that marvel's FCBD offerings are just red herrings. Maybe that .1 issue will somehow be part of this?

WOW !!!
I can't believe an event of this magnitude is having this kind of reaction. I say this knowing full well that I shall also not be buying anything remotely involved with this event, including the main "story" (For lack of a better word).
My seemingly self-indulgent proclamation is solely tied into the fact that 10 years ago this would have been a huge cash cow for Marvel. Of course, sadly, I still think it may end up being just that.
Marvel is just slowly losing me and that just kills the Lil Marvel Zombie in me. Heck, they lost me on 5 books this month JUST because of their ridiculous double shipping ideology. Too many books to buy so I had to drop some of their other titles to maintain my self imposed limit.
Nice work, Marvel.
And I am sooo sorry for taking this thread down a road it should not be on.
Move along, nothing to see here. Back on topic if you will ...

I really want to like the X-Men and the Avengers. I am enjoying the books now that the events are over, but here we go again. And a #0 issue of course. What happened to .1? So really, this is 13 issues if you count the #0... I guess. And I'm sure the lead up is the Loeb Cable series, so that's another 4 issues. Yikes. The story does intrigue me a little, but I'll have to see how it breaks down. Are the 12 issues part of the ongoing books or in addition? If they're within the ongoing books, I'll consider getting this, but I'm not buying 12 or 13 extra comics and maybe I'll just drop everything. Maybe Marvel should give the event crutch a rest, and figure out how they used to sell 100K of just regular issues of the New Avengers.
I've cut back on Marvel, but I still read a decent amount of their books. Sometimes I think about really nuking my list and just getting Amazing Spider-Man, Daredevil and Punisher, which all stay self-contained pretty much.

I think my decision on this will be made when I see how many tie-ins there are. If the event is just six months of an extra book every two months then I will probably read it because it interests me (even though Avengers vs X-Men has been done before). I can't afford 6 months of 20 extra books a month though so if their are too many tie-ins I will end up just dropping the regular books I read that get sucked in, in addition to avoiding the extra books.

12 issues is scaring me off as well. Generally speaking I find the longer the event, the worse it usually is.
I think of the Artifacts event over at Top Cow. It started as an interesting story but most of those middle issues feel like filler and we are just now getting towards the end and I've kinda lost interest due to the length of the thing.
I'm still on the fence on the Venom event though.

The 12 issues will be #0 and then .1-.11 culiminating in a #1 issue out of which 6 epilogues will spin that result in 4 intersecting books beginning at issue #1 and 2 oversized 1 shots for $8 a piece.

Kinda true, but with 52 there was an idea or three driving the story.
"X-Men fight Avengers" is not an idea. Every kid who's ever read comics has thought of it a thousand times over.

I will pick it up. I liked the hint at the conflict in Young Avengers: Children's Crusade.
