Are there any writers that you buy from with no hesitation? My favorite right now is Scott Synder, I signed up for Swamp Thing even w/o knowing anything about it other than the movie.

But now I have to add Joshua Hale Fialkov to the list as well. "Echoes" was brilliant, "I, Vampire" was a great #1 issue and I've heard nothing but good stuff about "Last of the Greats", which I'll get in the mail soon.

So from now these guys will have my money for any new series [including Joshua's Pilot issue from Top Cow] until they write something bad.

Right now these are the ones whose books I would buy based on the name even if I wasn't convinced by the cover, subject, genre, character, artist, etc.

Paul Cornell
Gail Simone
Grant Morrison
Geoff Johns
Ed Brubaker

Not a one

I'm an art guy so the art is more important to me. I might pick up a book off the rack if I recognize the writer but if the art does not grab me I will put it back no matter who wrote it.

I think it had too much Ethan Van Sciver.

The art was sooo bad. Just could not get past it.

My list is of writers who I will automatically "buy & try", but there's no writer out there who doesn't occasionally write something I don't care for.

Also, certain things are in my "no fly zone" & I won't get them regardless of the creative team (like the Marvel Ultimate books).

I feel a certain connection with these writers as they were quite open with the fans. I am now loyal to them. Fortunately, they are smart writers.

completely agree. These are folks that will get me to pick up a book I wouldn't normally try just based on the name.

A great recent example is Demon Knights. Normally I would never pick up a book featuring The Demon, but because Paul Cornell is involved, I would have probably tried the first issue. This was the biggest surprise for me in the New 52.

Same thing with Heroes for Hire. With the recent history of that group of characters, I would have never picked it up, but when I saw Abnett and Lanning, decided to try it and really like it.

I'm trying to think if there is someone out there I'd just buy based on his or her name on the cover and my gut reaction is to say "No".

Now I'll buy damn near anything with Ambush Bug, Supergirl, Alpha Flight, She-Hulk, etc. on the cover...but the writer isn't as important to me at that stage.

The exception to this rule? (Big duh)...Manga! If Koshi Rikdo or Naoki Urasawa had a hand in it, I'll pick it up. But they're also drawing what they write, and their work is translated before my eyes see it, so can I truly credit their "writing"? Certainly the plots are theirs...

For me, Garth Ennis, Warren Ellis, Ed Brubaker are easy choices. I've added Nick Spencer, Josh Fialkov and Hickman to the list recently and in Hickman's case, gone back and read a bunch of his creator owned before he was big time at Marvel.
