Saw it tonight with a friend. It was ok with several good moments, but I wasn't bowled over. There were a few "wha?" moments that took me out of the movie, so I definitely think it could have used some polish. But nothing that would stop me from recommending the movie to anyone.
Mostly not sure if it is in continuity relative to the other XMen movies, not that it really matters. Just kind of wondering about the continuity of a couple of main characters.
Definitely looking forward to sequels if the box office warrants it, but I really hope they invest a bit more in the overall product. The movie actually felt like a big-budget TV show at times, but I definitely found it worth watching.
I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5.

I'm not particularly a fan of X-Men in the comics, so I think I am closer to the target audience (though the target audience is generally people completely ignorant of the comics). Them screwing around with comic book stuff to make a better movie does not bother me at all, I think most movies adapted from other source media are going to have moments that bug people too attached to the source material. The Hollywood guys have to leave their mark by changing stuff around seemingly at random. I'm used to it.
I thought it was a really good flick. Not Thor or Iron Man level, but better than a lot of previous super-hero movies.
I liked the scene w/ Hugh Jackman using up the 1 allowed curse for a PG-13 rating.

I'm not even sure what the XMen comic continuity is.
Mostly wondered about the age of one character and how another was raised for about ten years.
Also liked the movie's version of "covert" and how the baddies have a really good sense of balance in one of the final scenes.
I'm not the kind who normally nitpicks movies, but this one took me out of it so many times.
But I liked it well enough. Worth seeing...

There seemed to be very little consistency in characters ages/timeframes/power applications with the comics.
Heck, they even went with the Hollywood staple where the main bad guy MUST have been involved in the origin with one of the main heroes..... I've gotten used to it.
Heck, now that I start thinking about it (which I didn't while watching the movie) there are a TON of inconsistencies that even I , with only my vague knowledge of X-Men could point out.......
NOW it's starting to bug me!
OK, OK.... this is just "movie world".......

Well, I for one was amazed by this film. I left the theater still excited about what I saw, and that hasn't happened in a long while. I was a huge X-men fan until the late 90's early 2000's, and the changes that movies, t.v make to the comic continuity used to drive me nuts. I remember when I was 15, I would nitpick the inaccuracies of the X-Men and Spider-man cartoons. did was make me lose the enjoyment of seeing my favorite comic book heroes come to life for the first time in my life. But, now I understand that these movies are not made for us. Once I started to understand this, I've really began to enjoy the movies more for what they are.
The movie not matching up with comic continuity has been about the only complaint I've heard from people who've seen the movie. That's a very weak criticism. Havok being a member of the X-men before Cyclops, or Mystic and Charles living together since childhood shouldn't effect the movie's overall appeal or be a scale to the success of the film. I try to explain to folks, that these films are not made for the 200,000 comic fans' enjoyment, but for the millions of other people that are fans of the film and who may never know that X-men was a comic. The movies are not documentaries or adaptations of our beloved books, because that would be very boring. The movies would show a fight with Magneto and then the next film's villain would be the Vanisor, and then what Ka-Zar?
For me, this movie has topped the other X-films, and Thor. James McAvoy has blown Patrick Steward away as Prof. X. He played a more passionate charismatic, loving mentoring Prof then I've seen in another Prof. X. The way Charles lost the use of his legs in the film was incredible, and so much more touching than if it would have been done by Lucifer or the Shadow King. It also added a great new dynamic to the relationship between Charles and Erik.

The nitpicks don't bother me except that they took me out of the movie a few times. I mostly point them out to have a bit of fun, but I'll talk about what I liked.
Above all, I liked the acting of Prof X and Magneto. I think that made the movie for me. The guy who played Hank I found very charismatic.
I think what comic fans like me especially appreciate the fact that this is a story that predates even the XMen origin in the comics. At least I'm not familiar with this part of the XMen's time line. Completely fresh from that point of view. And I think overall they pulled it off.
