Close in hotel has been $200-$250 a night minimum for 3 or 4 years. What were you thinking you'd get for a rate? The best thing we've found so far was $750 per person for 6 of us.

Unless you pile in and sleep guys on the floor it is going to be pricey.

The point is that I was NOT thinking about it.....until I saw the numbers being thrown around......

Is it crazy that I've actually considered moving to San Diego in part so that I could always have a place to stay during the con?

Well, John drives from Austin every year.....

Anyway, not sure with how hotel rates have gone up in recent years, but in days gone by, it would have been cheaper to get a hotel 20 miles away & rent a car than to stay right by the con. So living within driving distance is not necessarily the only option when considering to not stay right by the con.

In recent years hotels even 5-10 miles away have gone up in price astronomically, so you have to go farther afield to get a cheap room.

BUT you get a different experience, so it comes down to what that experience is worth to you.

BTW, Trev, don't you get Hotel points with all your IBM travel? Or don't you travel that much? If you could get a hotel for free (like I did) 5 miles away & rent a car for $30-40/day, that's better than paying $300 per night.

Wife and I view any SDCC trip we do as our "vacation" so we're not above splurging on a close hotel. We usually skip either Friday or Saturday and do something around San Diego (I hear they have a beach!)

We're actually looking at doing that Coronado thing and making use of the Ferry/WaterTaxi this time around. Still researching, but that may be a great idea.

I like being walking distance to the con if I can. If I end up not winning the hotel lotto or getting a place close in, I would explore it. The $$ to me are worth it to be closer to 'the action'.

At IBM my allegiance is primarily to Hyatt, but I have points all over the place. Probably not enough to do more than a couple of nights though.

As I said, it's all about what it's worth to you. For you being close is worth $1000+, to me it's not.

May just have to give in and hit the Baltimore one. Its only about 3 or 4 hours away and small enough to break me in nice and slow. Then maybe a New York trip to hit a bigger con.

Baltimore was my experiment with traveling to a con before I went to SDCC the first time. Great show.

Where are you at? If Baltimore is a consideration - I'm enjoying the Toronto Cons, and Toronto is a great city. FanExpo is the end of August, third largest show in North America, but hotels can be had pretty cheap (by Toronto standards). I'm staying about half an hour away (but close to the other reasons I go up there so it's not a big deal) for like $86 a night - parking included. Parking downtown would be necessary whether I stay or commute in every day, but it's a lot cheaper to park for the few hours of the con than all weekend. Plus I drive from downtown to where I'm staying every night after the con anyway. I'm still looking for a downtown hotel 'deal', but it's possible to get a room for around $125. The reason I haven't is that none of those deals are for two beds and since I'm going with my buddy I'm not sharing a bed. There's also Toronto ComicCon in three short weeks. You can meet the whole cast of Star Trek:: TNG for as much as a grand . I managed a room for $94 a night about half a block away from that con. It's my first time to Toronto ComicCon. I went to Wizard World Toronto Comic Con last year but HobbyStar has sued them over the name so it doesn't look like that con will happen this year.

Sorry for the minor thread-jack. I think I'm jealous I'll probably never make it to San Diego. It just sounds like too much hassle to deal with.
