Star Trek II

Post by HassanT »

This week they had Star Trek II: Wraith of Khan in HD on HBO, so I recorded it to watch with my daughters, since I haven't purchase the Star Trek movies on DVD yet (I am assuming that they have some special editions come out when the new movie comes out).

My daughters really enjoyed the movie. In fact, we started to watch the movie Thursday night but had to stop it because they had to go to bed. So Friday night, they (not me) wanted to finish watching the movie. Just a couple observations from my oldest daughter:

1) The clothes look weird (the civilian clothes)
2) Why are the monitors look so small and old (Back then the video monitors look so high-tech, now not so much now).

They said that they enjoyed the movie more than the TV episodes, which makes sense. I forgotten how great this movie was and I still consider this one to be the best Star Trek movie. In fact, watching this movie made me realized that I could relate more to Star Trek in the 23rd century than the 24th century. The characters are closer to real characters than the perfect characters of the 24th century. I mean the movie started out with Kirk and McCoy drinking Romulan ale. I don't see Picard doing that.

I am really looking forward to the new Star Trek movie. It will probably will be the first action movie that I took my kids to see in the theater.

It is also great to experience the movies again with your children. I am really hoping that my kids get into sci-fi or fantasy or I am going to be seeing a lot of movies in the future on my own :)

I was really looking forward to the new Star Trek film until I saw the redesign of the communicator on page 387. Ugly redesign of a classic piece of pop culture. That has me a bit worried about what else they might be "fixing" in the movie.

I think it is great that you introduced your daughters to Star Trek and that they liked. That just shows why Star Trek II is most people's favorite Star Trek movie. It has a something for everybody, it is the one Star Trek film that I will not pass up on no matter what else is on TV.

But you are right if you exam any of the Star Trek films you will notice little things that will make you think ...like why is it that as time went on Kirk got more hair.

I've been trying to keep the spoilers to a min. about the new Star Trek film, but I still have heard a lot of comments like John's. Even the J.J. Abrams has come out and pretty much said that their will be things that will be changed. This has gotten me worried but not enough to not want to see it.

I getthat things will be changed an updated. I'm okay with that. But there are a couple of iconic aspects of Star Trek like the design of the Enterprise, the phaser, the tricoder and the communicator which can be updated and streamlined but shouldn't be radically changed. The new design for the classic phaser doesn't thrill me but doesn't overly bother me. It is the complete revamp of the communicator that seems like overkill.

I'll still see the movie (although I might wait for the DVD like I do for most things) but I have some reservations about some of the creative decisions they seen to have made.

And, yes, Star Trek II is the best Star Trek movie so far. It will be interesting to see how people think the new one stacks up against the others.

I have been staying away from spoilers as well. I am not too concern about Abrams changing things around. I kinda felt that the previous people in charge of the ST franchise screwed it up big time towards the end.

Just like the James Bond reboot, I want a great movie with the essentially the classic characters.

There is no 5th movie!!!

I will probably stick to Star Trek II to IV only. V was horrible and VI was ok, but they were too old. My kids wouldn't want to see a movie with actors the same age as their grandmother.

I will also stay away from the ST in the 24th century. It will be way too confusing for them at this point.

While STAR TREK V was a bad movie, it did play better when I watched it on television. Like a made-for-TV movie. The scene with McCoy and his father was the best part of the movie.

Anyone catching the PHASE II/NEW VOYAGES fan episodes? Fun stuff. For those not familiar with it, consider what if the original show ran a 4th season but with today's effects? Sure, they had to recast the characters but they have slipped in some of the original actors when possible. And they are free on the internet.
