Potential Manga to Sample

Post by doctormo »

I recently started to dip my toe into manga again after a long hiatus. After listening to the manga discussion on Back Issue Spotlight #36 (celebrating 500 issues of comics), I thought I would share a few series on my radar.

1). Ultraman - Yes, I am referring to the old Japanese hero who would grow 50 feet tall and fights alien monsters.

2). One-Punch Man - Superbeing who fights monsters and alien threats, some of the fights can be brutal like the ones in Robert Kirkman's Invincible. This is also an anime series.

3). Boku no Hero Academia/My Hero Academia - A Hogwarts/New Mutants/New X-Men Academy X series about young would be superheros who attend school. This is also an anime series.

Ultraman I like a lot.
Heard great stuff about One Punch Man but haven't tried it yet.
I've read Deadman Wonderland and that was good.
Also want to read Ajin when I get the chance. That looks good.
Of course Death Note is super.
Steins Gate is a worthy read as well.

i got some other recommendations from perseus, more slice of life stuff like Yotsuba about a widowed dad with a young daughter. About her adventures learning life and life lessons - A Silent Voice - about a girl that's challenged being bullied. Orange about a girl who is in high school. Wakes up one morning to find a letter addressed to her, but from Herself in the future. Barakamon - A high school kid that moves to the country that is good at Calligraphy

those all came highly recommended - have you read those?

My manga reading has been going really well.

I finished the 7 volumes of A Silent Voice, and it is pretty fantastic. I knew it would be. Very serious topics, coming of age, and all of the above. Highly recommended.

I just picked up The Gods Lie which is one volume, and it is a romance manga. You may think it is not for you, but don't underestimate those kind of stories.

Also, the next one after is the two volume A Distant Neighborhood by Jiro Tanaguchi. Mr. Tanaguchi passed away this year, and he is considered one of the greats in manga. I'm excited to read this.

I also wanted to invite everyone to contribute to our Manga thread over on the Slack channel, as well this thread on the forum. Please feel free to give your input on what manga you are reading and anything you want to say about them.

Recommendations are always appreciate, as well as anything manga related. I wanted to say that there are many manga volumes that deserve our attention, and it's great to have so many diverse titles out there. Many of us read the Big 2, but I wanna challenge you to read a manga or ask about manga that may interest you.

Thank you guys and lets have fun with manga! Big shout out to Eric of Kowabunga Comics for the great conversations so far.

I, too, am dipping deeper and deeper into manga. We are attempting to ramp up our manga offerings in the shop, so as a by product I have much more at my fingertips to peruse.

My favorite by far is Black Butler. Other titles I am reading through are Deathnote, Fire Force, and Asterisk War.

My wife is a manga fiend, and has a handful of series she has enjoyed or is reading. Her favorites have been Fruits Basket, Fairy Tail, and QQ Sweeper.

QQ Sweeper is coming back this fall as Queens Quality. She also is in the process of following That Wolf Boy is Mine, Liselotte & Witch's Forest, Disney's Kilala Pricess, Cells at Work, and a couple of others I can't remember. The Cells at Work is a fun one for biology people, as it is a manga of how different diseases like influenza or the common cold are fought.

Make sure anyone reading manga checks out our Manga channel in Slack. We just want to see what others are reading and enjoying.
