Back issue podcast ideas.

Bob, the Star Trek TPB from Checker Publishing (not Checkered as I stated before) aren't remastered although that would've been nice. I agree the price is high even when discounted at IST. I'm not sure I'll pick all five volumes, soon to be six, because of the price. If you're not a Star Trek fan at all I see where you wouldn't get much out of these comics. Hard core Trekkies probably won't like these comics either because the stories didn't fit in to the overall Trek universe.

John, I like your idea of doing like a round table on the overall Star Trek comic book franchise. I would like to hear that. I'm thinking about getting that Star Trek Complete Collection on DVD. This is a good way to get all the stories but save some money. Although, I know the latest series from IDW aren't included in the DVD complete collection. What's your favorite series from IDW thus far?

The Mirror Images series has been fun and the Star Trek: Year Four: Enterprise Experiment has been fairly good. The Star Trek: Year Four series itself was a bit weak. The Star Trek: Assignment Earth series has been some great done-in-one stories.

I know this goes against the consensus, but I would enjoy an occasional back issue spotlight on a run of a book that hasn't been reprinted, but should be. For example, my favorite run of Justice League of America is the one Steve Englehart wrote from issues 139 - 150 (minus two JSA crossover issues). The run Englehart did over on Detective Comics at the same time has correctly been hailed as a classic and reprinted more than once, but the JLA issues haven't ever been reprinted, to my knowledge. Dick Dillin isn't as popular an artist as Marshall Rogers, and that probably explains why the run hasn't been reprinted, but the writing is as strong, and I think Dillin's work is some of his best from that period. I really think this run deserves a little more love than it receives.

The Len Wein JLA run, most of which hasn't been reprinted, and the original Bat Lash run, which holds up very well and has gorgeous Nick Cardy art would also be good choices.

I'm not asking for a complete change in direction, I just think an occasional spotlight on an overlooked gem would be nice. Of course, I enjoy going on scavenger hunts for back issues and enjoy being tipped off to good stuff to hunt.

I'm really looking forward to that Conan spotlight.

I think what we may do is stay mainly with things that have been collected for the Back Issue spotlight but every once in a while do something that hasn't been collected.

How about a back issue spotlight on the All Star Comics revivial from the 1970's?

Point taken, though the thing with covering runs that have not been collected is that both John & I need to own the actual issues. John can chime in here, I'm not sure how far back his JLA run goes.

PS: We now have enough Back issue ideas to last us quite a long time, unless we up the frequency that we put them out.

It was a great episode guys, I loved it! In San Diego a couple of years ago I had both Roy Thomas and Mike Ploog sign my copy of Conan #57. Roy's Conan run had a lot of high points, I think more than any other series he ever worked on. You both did a great job of identifying strengths of the series and giving a balanced assessment.

The back-issue spotlights are probably my favorite episodes of your show, as your experience with comics seems to run a little deeper than most podcasters, and you generally make very sound observations. I certainly would like it if you decided to increase the frequency of these episodes.

I have Justice League of America from #117 up with an assortment of issues prior to that. Most of the earilier ones that I have are the JLA/JSA team up issues.

I have All Star Comics #58, 68-74 but I don't think I've got #59-67. I've also got the two Justice Society trades that reprint some of those stories. I'm pretty sure that the issues of All Star Comics that I've got are sitting in my "to read" back issue group. I'll try to remember to check when I get home tonight.

I have all of those trades and always enjoyed the JLA/JSA crossovers so I'd be game for that.

I would like to hear them once a week

Seriously, one every two or three weeks would be great. You can alternate between recent and older material.
