DC canceling more titles

Post by fudd71 »

Looks like DC is canceling 4 more titles as they are solicited as final issues

Personally I'm really going to miss Dial H, I know it wasn't that popular but I enjoyed it quite a lot and thought it was an excellent series.

Not only did Batwing get a chance to see if the new direction will work but so is Stormwatch. Both of those titles sold less than Legion of Super-Heroes in April.

This leaves 60% of the original New 52 titles still standing.

Other titles in the danger zone are Katana, All Star Western, Justice League of Americas Vibe and Phantom Stranger. I would be a little surprised if any of those have final issues in the next solicitation round given how new Katana and Justice League of Americas Vibe are and how Phantom Stranger ties into the Trinity War. Of course, I'd also be surprised if Phantom Stranger last past Trinity War.

If nothing else, we should see four new titles in the next round of solicitations.

While I agree that Katana and Vibe are too new to be cancelled, DCs past behavior doesn't seem to support this. The next solicitations for those two titles would be #8 issues. The first round of cancellations were all at issue #8, Threshold #8 is solicited as a Final Issue this time, and GI Combat,Team 7 and Sword of Sorcery never even it made it to issue #8.

Good point. I was thinking that based on the issue number of what was released, not what has been solicited. In light of your correction (and thanks for that), both are likely to end whenever the current storyline ends which could be as soon as the following issue.

I hope DC have a bunch of titles ready to be launched.

I was reading Demon Knights in trade and was enjoying it. I had a feeling the ax was coming but I will miss it.

Don't forget that the Batman Inc. ongoing is ending with issue 13. No new ongoing was solicited this month since there will be the Batman Inc. Special #1, but a fifth new title seems needed to take its place. (Why it is a "Special" instead of an "Annual" I don't know.)

Also, this month 6 titles end: Deathstroke, Hawkman, Firestorm, Ravagers, Team7, and Sword of Sorcery.

With only 4 titles to replace them in June: Batman/Superman, Superman Unchained, Pandora, and Larfleeze.

If September this year has villain based one-shot titles, similar to zero month last year, then it might not be until October that DC gets back to 52 ongoing titles.

And so falls another of the titles from my ever-shrinking DC list

Re: DC canceling more titles

so of the 31 survivors, Batman has the same writer & artist, 8 are about to be retooled. How about the other 22? I know there has been changes in artists or writers on JL, JLD, Superman, Action, Animal Man, Swamp Thing - those 6. How about the other 16? Do any of them still have the same writer/artist teams?

What if you rephrased the question to just writers? Out of the 31, how many are still being written by the same writer? Batman & JL. Any others?

Also, what about my other question - how many titles did DC introduce in the nu52 that weren't in the old DCU that have survived?

addendum: And, actually, B&R isn't really a change - it's a Batman book being put out by Tomasi & Gleason - that's not changing, right? Sure the title has temporarily changed - but we all know Damian/Robin will be back soon, don't we? So Batman and B&R are really 2 books with same writer/artist/essentially the same book they were at the start of nu52. any others?

Wonder Woman with Azzarello and Chiang still has the original team (Tony Akins has done some fill-ins but this title remains unchanged for the most part)

All-Star Western has the same writer artist team, Gray&Palmiotti with Moritat (there have been some fill-in issues but mostly Moritat on the main Hex story). This is also a title while having existed before the New 52 it had been quite a while so you could almost call in new.

As far as writers goes as you mentioned Batman, the Batman & book and Justice League, also the two from the above post Wonder Woman and All-Star Western.

The other six titles with the original writer that have not yet been announced to be changing or cancelled are:

Animal Man
Aquaman
Batgirl
Batwoman
Flash
Nightwing

So that is 11 by my count

oh..I forgot about Flash. That one actually has the same writer AND artist (same guy! lol well, also same co-writer).

So 11 books with the same writer for almost 2 years - that's pretty impressive, I think. I wonder what the comparable figure is for Marvel books over the past 2 years (although perhaps would be fairer to ask this question after Marvel Now is 2 yrs old?).

If we wait the 2 years, and things continue as they seem to be going, I don't think it will be hard for Marvel to match the 11 when just three of their writers will be responsible for over half of that, with 6. You figure Hickman, Bendis and Fraction will have:
AVENGERS
NEW AVENGERS
UNCANNY X-MEN
NEW X-MEN
FF
FANTASTIC FOUR

Add in Fractions HAWKEYE, Waid's DAREDEVIL and then you only need 3 more to hit that 11.
(Of course, having it NOW and having it THEN ... are two different things  )

EDIT - of course, looking over the remaining titles, and taking another years worth of time into consideration, perhaps it will not be as easy as I originally thought. I mean, sure you could probably add Waid's HULK and Bendis' GotG to titles that will probably still have the same writer at the helm ... probably, but that only gives us 10 and ... after that ... Hmmm??
