Previews Spotlight #061 (Nov->Jan): Nov 9th, 5pm pacific

Post by BobBretall »

Previews should be coming out on Weds October 31st, which means the Previews call will be on Friday Nov 9th at 5pm Pacific / 6pm Mountain / 7pm Central / 8pm Eastern.

Submissions for the Previews Spotlight #061 show should be in by Saturday Nov 10th.

As always, get on Skype around the start time (or join any time after, the call can run 4 hours of rousing comics chat) and look for BobBretall or thejohnmayo & message to get joined into the call.

Of course you can start sending in submissions as soon as you have them done. Sending them in early is appreciated as it give us more time to organize the clips and plan out the episode.

Discuss any of the new comics AND call dibs on reviewing any particular comic on this thread.

Remember: We encourage anyone to send in a short audio clip where they can talk about any book that's coming out in the upcoming Previews that they are really excited about. The email address to send the clips to is TheGuys@ComicBookPage.com. (Some people were only send them to either just John or just Bob and we both need to get them to prepare to recording the episode. By using TheGuys email address, the email goes to both Bob and John.)

PLEASE: Each featured item should be in a separate audio file.

We would also appreciate it if you put the page number followed by the full name of the item in the filename. If you don't know the page number, that is fine. Just leave it off. But having the full name of the item the clip is for makes it much easier for us to organize the files and prepare for recording the episode.
Tips on how to record a clip can be found here.

This month's new MarvelNOW offerings:
UNCANNY X-FORCE #1
Sam Humphries (W) • Ron Garney (A)
THE DARKEST CORNERS OF THE MUTANT UNIVERSE: EXPOSED! The X-Men: sworn to protect a world that fears and hates them. UNCANNY X-FORCE: charged to deal with situations the X-Men fear and hate! Psylocke and Storm lead a new team of outcasts and scoundrels, including fan-favorite Puck, the villainous Spiral, and the mysterious Cluster. The first adversary to strike out from the darkness? X-legend
Not for me, but others could be excited by this.

NEW AVENGERS #1
Jonathan Hickman (W) •Steve Epting (A)
To prevent the collision of our universe with another, the Illuminati, led by the Black Panther, must assemble NOW! It's the most powerful and brilliant team in the Marvel Universe--The Black Panther, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Black Bolt, Mister Fantastic, Namor the Sub-Mariner and The Beast--against an infinite legion of parallel realities.
I'm on-board for Hickman's Avengers titles.....

SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #1
DAN SLOTT (W) • RYAN STEGMAN (A/C)
THEN!...Peter Parker spent a lifetime living up to the responsibilities his powers foisted upon him but his Amazing story finally ended dramatically in the historic Spider-Man #700. NOW!...The new Amazing Spider-Man has arrived and he is better in every single way. Smarter, stronger...Superior.
The new guy is better than Peter Parker in every way, except for his ability to get me to read his comic. I'm skipping this.
There was pretty much only 1 way to get me to NOT buy a Spider-Man book, and that's by making Spider-Man someone other than Peter Parker.

SAVAGE WOLVERINE #1
Frank Cho (W) • Frank Cho (A/C)
Wolverine awakes to find himself transported to the Savage Land and labeled public enemy number one! With no memory of how he got there, and Shanna the She-Devil his only ally, Logan must unravel the mystery that slumbers at the heart of the Savage Land before it finds a way to kill him first. This January, Wolverine is all brawls, babes, and brachiosaurs, and you'll never see the end -- or the future of the Marvel Universe -- NOW!
They had me at "Cho". I'll buy this as long as Frank Cho is doing it. I am a bit worried about a bait-and-switch once we get a few issues down the line, Frank Cho does not have a good track record for sticking with a book, so this is likely a short time buy for me.

YOUNG AVENGERS #1
KIERON GILLEN (W) • JAMIE MCKELVIE (A/C)
Legacy isn't a dirty word... but it's an irrelevant one. It's not important what our parents did. It matters what WE do. Someone has to save the world. You're someone. Do the math. The critically acclaimed team of Gillen/McKelvie/Wilson (with added Norton Sauce) decide to reinvent the teen superhero comic for the 21st century, uniting Wiccan, Hulkling and Hawkeye with Loki, Marvel Boy and Ms. America. No pressure. Young Avengers is as NOW! as the air in your lungs, and twice as vital. It's the book that knows Hyperbole is the BEST! THING! EVER!
I'm on board for this. I'm a big fan of the Gillen McKelvie team.

MORBIUS: THE LIVING VAMPIRE #1
JOE KEATINGE (W) • RICHARD ELSON (A)
Morbius....the hunted, haunted fugitive.
Morbius...the dead souled scientist.
Morbius...the Living Vampire.
Somewhere inside Doctor Michael Morbius is a good man who just needs a second chance. After escaping from The Raft in Amazing Spider-Man 699.1, Morbius is scraping desperately through each day trying to carve out a life in a world that has turned its back on him. However his redemption...may be worse than his sin.
NOW Morbius returns in this long-awaited ongoing series, where the line between hero and villain becomes brutally and bloodily blurred.
I think I'm going to skip this. In retrospect, I think I'll skip the #0 issue (aka ASM #699.1) also. I don't need to be treated to the line between hero and villain becoming brutally and bloodily blurred...

-----------------------------

All in all, Marvel did good with me this month, I'm going to try 3 of the 6 new titles.

Other than Hickman/Epting avengers, I don't think any of those looked good to me! lol! But will check out the Spider-man title w/low expectations.

I'm not sure about the other titles, but on the Avengers panel at NYCC they said that Avengers will be double shipping as a regular thing - 24 issues per year, and New Avengers will be 12 issues per year.

I don't think so. They replaced "Amazing" with "Superior".

They also have "Avenging" (also featuring the "new guy").

If they really said this, then I think it's a lie for New Avengers, since they are soliciting #1 & 2 as a double ship for January, unless they plan to skip a month later in the year.

ONE TRICK RIP-OFF / DEEP-CUTS HC – GEM OF THE MONTH
story PAUL POPE art / cover PAUL POPE
288 PAGES / FC / T+
$29.99 US
Young lovers Tubby and Vim want to escape – escape the mistakes they've made, the lives they've lived, and the dirty city weighing them down. Their plan is simple –all they have to do is rip-off Tubby’s pals, the One Tricks – the toughest street gang in LA.
If they pull it off, they're set for life. If not, their lives won't matter much anyway.
What was going to be a smooth, straight-forward heist becomes a fast-paced battle to the death.
From Eisner Award-winning writer/artist PAUL POPE (Batman: Year 100, THB, Heavy Liquid, 100%) and presented for the first time in color by JAMIE GRANT (All-Star Superman). ONE TRICK RIP-OFF/DEEP-CUTS is 288 pages of raw power, of which over 150 pages are comprised of new, rare, and never before seen stories created during POPE’s time traveling the world in the ‘90s.
Included in the "Deep Cuts" section is a bounty of unpublished and rare work POPE did in the '90s, including the legendary "Supertrouble" manga, created for Kodansha in Japan, appearing here in print for the first time.
It's a tour de force of pure, kinetic storytelling that will keep your eyes peeled until the very last page.
Paul Pope fans rejoice!

10th ANNIVERSARY LANDMARK 100 th ISSUE SPECTACULAR!
THE DEATH OF EVERYONE: CONCLUSION! It’s all been building to this. Mark Grayson’s entire life as a superhero, all he’s learned, all he’s endured, it’s all been leading to this one moment. Will he become the hero he was meant to or will he choose... a DIFFERENT path? The aftermath of this EXTRA-SIZED issue will shock you.
I love Invincible, but think Kirkman is in for a disappointment when this doesn't sell anywhere near the # of copies as Walking Dead #100s zillion covers.
FATALE #12
story ED BRUBAKER
art SEAN PHILLIPS & DAVE STEWART
cover SEAN PHILLIPS
JANUARY 23
32 PAGES / FC / M
$3.50
The curse of the Femme Fatale has been around long before Josephine.
Now we go back to the dark ages, to Medieval times, and the story of a young woman warrior facing unknowable horror that echoes down through time! Another standalone FATALE FLASHBACK issue, and a perfect place for new readers to jump on board!
And remember each issue of FATALE contains extra content, articles and artwork that are not available anywhere but the printed single issues.
Take that, trade waiters!! :D

Dark Horse that caught my eye:
THE ANSWER! #1
Mike Norton (W/A), Dennis Hopeless (W), and Mark Englert (C)
Devin McKenzie is an insomniac librarian with a knack for solving puzzles. The Answer! is a masked crime fighter with a giant exclamation point on his face. Aside from a penchant for late nights, they share nothing in common . . . until both become embroiled in a deadly mystery surrounding a sinister motivational speaker!
32 pages, $3.99, in stores on Jan. 23.
More Mike Norton!! [WebWiz20]
THE BLACK BEETLE: NO WAY OUT #1
Francesco Francavilla (W/A/Cover)
Black Beetle's investigation of two local mob bosses is interrupted when a mysterious explosion murders them and a pub full of gangsters--taking out most of Colt City's organized crime in one fell swoop. Who could pull off such a coup, and what danger might that murderous bomber do to Colt City and Black Beetle?
32 pages, $3.99, in stores on Jan. 16.

Francavilla is knocking it out of the park with this one!
STAR WARS #1
Brian Wood (W), Carlos D'Anda (A), Gabe Eltaeb (C), and Alex Ross (Cover)
This is Star Wars as you remember it . . . and as you have never seen it before! We're taking you back to those heady, adventure-filled days following the destruction of the Death Star--when the Empire ruled, the Rebels were on the run, and the galaxy was a dangerous place where anything might happen!
32 pages, $3.50, in stores on Jan. 9.
:hmmm: I wonder what a Brian Wood Star Wars story will be like??

That's my recollection - but could be wrong. I didn't read it anywhere.

I'm planning on getting all of these Dark Horse including the Brian Wood Star Wars #1. That's a trippy cover Alex Ross has got going on for Star Wars #1. I like the drawing and design but the colors are kind of making me dizzy.

Sad that there is so little double shippin' goodness in January?
They've been up in the 15-18 double-shipped titles in the past so this seemed downright reasonable.

It's like when they raised gas to $4.83 a gallon here in SoCal. Now when I find it for "only" $4.59 I think I'm getting a deal.

Sad that 'only' 10 books are double shipping. This is one of the two main things that caused me to drop ALL Marvel books. I wouldn't mind picking up a few of the books with the NOW! 'reboot', but the Marketing/business shenanigans continue. [WebWiz19]

$4.59? Is that for 87? I run 93 and the cheapest place in town 'only' got as high as $4.33. Most of them were at $4.50 or so, but that's come down about 20 cents this past week. The silver lining with that price point is that it makes investing in non-fossil-fuel energy sources pretty much a no-brainer. Our pain may end sooner rather than later. Not that a possible future energy independence helps us with our comics budget today.

Not for me, but others could be excited by this.
That would be "me"! Spiral is finally...FINALLY...in a book. My favorite X-villain fighting on the side of the angels (well, sorta!)? I'm totally in on this one. Kinda hoping it's "Crazy back from Hell" Puck from the end of the Pak/Van Lente Alpha Flight run as well.

Marvel is just kicking my (bleep) with all these great new titles. It's my sincere hope the books themselves will be able to live up to my expectations for them.

Added links for Dynamite, Oni, & Zenescope....

Dynamite:
MASKS #3
Written by Chris Roberson, art by Dennis Calero
With criminals and corrupt politicians in power, the masked vigilantes are on the run. The Spider ventures to Albany to investigate the newly elected governor who has signed all of the unjust measures into law, while Green Hornet seeks to find the secret masters of the Justice Party. The Shadow encounters other heroes who have run afoul of the Black Legions, and still more individuals are inspired to don masks and take to the streets in the name of justice.
I'm a bit disappointed in the bait-and-switch we got on this title, after I bought in with #1 because Alex Ross was supposed to be doing the interior art & not just the covers. I suspect sales will plummet after the first issue.
